Eleven teachers at E. P. Todd Elementary school are studying Spanish this week. Their goal is to have parent conferences with Spanish speaking parents without relying on the students to translate. Their class is not a traditional Spanish class, but is designed to teach the specific words and phrases they need to communicate about school.
Rather than spending a lot of time learning to conjugate verbs, teachers are learning how to ask questions and answer them, how to listen to parent concerns and tell parents how their children are doing. While elementary age children learn new languages quickly, their parents learn more slowly, so E. P. Todd is making the effort to provide parents with information to make their children more successful in school.
Carolina Recycling also provided ESL classes for its workers and Spanish for Supervisors to create a better and more efficient working enviroment.
SCC C&CE also offers Spanish classes taught by native speakers in other specific job areas: banking, retail, law enforcement, landscaping and more. Other languages are also available, ncluding German and ASL (American Sign Language). In addition, S&CE offers ESL (English as a Second Language).
