“We believe the students will enjoy a good quality of life and education on this campus,” James Moss, chairman of the Cherokee County Economic Development Board, said. “And with that, who knows … this may become the ‘Little Harvard of the South.’”
Monday, October 8 was the grand opening of the academic building of the Cherokee County Campus of Spartanburg Community College. SCC President Dan Terhune, Executive Director Daryl Smith, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly, state Reps. Lanny Littlejohn and Dennis Moss, and Cherokee County Council Chairman Hoke Parris were joined by about 75 guests. The campus is located off SC Highway 11 at exit 92 on I-85 in Gaffney. Built by Sossamon Construction of Gaffney, the two-story building offers 10 regular classrooms, science and nursing labs, a library, faculty offices and a commons area where students can study.
Two library specialists, Nancy Taylor and Tanya Newman, are available for research assistance and bibliographic instruction. The library houses a specialized collection of materials for Cherokee County Campus curriculum, access to research databases, electronic books & journals, and e-audio books along with popular fiction. Electronic media resources include PCs and laptops for student use, TV/VCR/DVD, a copier and a scanner for student and public use.
Currently 278 students are enrolled in academic classes, in addition to students in C&CE at the Cherokee Training Facility owned by the Spartanburg Community College Foundation on the same campus with the Freightliner FCCC Service and Training center.
State Representative Dennis Moss said, “This facility is an important asset for the city, county and the entire state. “The future of the students here will be bright because of the assets provided by this community. They will be able to hit the ground running with the knowledge and skills needed to help the next generation.”
