Spartanburg County philanthropists Foster and Ruth Chapman were honored as the Spartanburg Community College (SCC) 2007 Benefactors of the Year at a recent ceremony held in Columbia and sponsored by the SC Technical College System to honor benefactors from each of the state’s 16 technical colleges for their generosity and support of higher education.
“Foster and Ruth Chapman are gracious, caring, warm individuals who put their time, energy and money into family and community,” said Nancy Dickson, executive director of the Spartanburg Community College Foundation. “Neither pretentious, demanding or judgmental, Foster Chapman is a man of influence, candor and wit. His involvement with Spartanburg Community College through Johnson Development allowed the College to achieve its goal of developing and implementing the Tyger River Campus in Duncan.”
The Chapmans also established the A. Foster and Ruth Gray Chapman Single Parent Achievement Award, an endowed scholarship of $64,000. “We want people (who receive this award) with drive and determination that are intent on changing their condition in life for the betterment of themselves and for their children but lack the resources to get a chance,” Foster said about the scholarship.
Recognized numerous times for their involvement by the College and the Foundation, the Chapmans are highly regarded in the organizations and activities in which they participate.
