Jeff Hunt, academic instructor, and Terrill Brown, continuing education intructor with Spartanburg Community College, will meet with instructors from area technical colleges on Monday to explore the possibility of making college credits available for courses offered through PRime ED, NCCER, and Amatrol. Greenville Tech, Piedmont Tech and Tri-County Tech will also attend.
Prime Ed offers industrial maintenance. NCCER, the National Center for Construction Education and Research, offers residential construction courses. Amatrol includes industrial maintenance, machine tool technology, robotics, and quality assurance.
The purpose for seeking to award credits for the class modules is to give individuals and industries more choices for appropriate workforce development. Currently, a student may take one learning application package (LAP) at a time to learn specific skills, such as Basic Electricity. Or the student can register for classes leading to an associate’s degree, which inculdes taking general education classes such as Math and English as well as the technical skills classes, but is a step towards a four year degree.
The blended on-line and lab model allows the student to get the lecture and theoretical information online through video and self-paced presentations. Then the student comes to the college to perform the actual tasks on the equipment in the labs with supervision of the instructor. Allowing college credit will give academic students access to these programs, allowing the instructors to focus on hands-on learning.

What were the results of this meeting? I think that the courses offered by Amatrol are very professional and they use highly qualified instructors. I believe it would be a great thing for CEU’s earned in Amatrol classes to be accepted by
Spartanburg Community College.
