The SC Technical College System, of which Spartanburg Community College is a member, includes two programs that train a stronger workforce for South Carolina.
One program is Ready SC (formerly known as CATT, the Center for Accelerated Technology Training), which provides low-cost training for industries. Qualifying is easy. There are no contracts or legal agreements involved. They require that the:
- Jobs projected must be permanent
- Pay represents a competitive wage for the area
- Benefit package must include health insurance
- Number of jobs created must be sufficient enough to allow readySC™ to provide training in a cost-effective manner

Another workforce development program is Apprenticeship Carolina, which is ready to help you learn more about registered apprenticeships and determine if they should be a part of your workforce development solution. A registered apprenticeship is an employer-sponsored flexible training program that cultivates highly skilled workers who meet the workforce demands of a competitive global economy. A registered apprenticeship consists of two complementary components:
- supervised on-the-job training that is provided by an employer at the workplace and is customized to meet job-specific needs; and
- related technical instruction (or “RTI”). This is often delivered by a technical college and serves to reinforce the theory underlying the skills being learned on-the-job.
Funding support for registered apprenticeships is available in some cases:
- Tax credit: Eligible businesses can now receive a tax credit of $1,000 for each registered apprentice employed for at least seven months during each year of an apprentice’s program, for up to four years of such a program. You can view a copy of the South Carolina tax form for the apprenticeship tax credit here.
- Workforce Investment Area Funding: Some costs associated with registered apprenticeships, including instruction, training and wages, may be covered for apprentices meeting local Workforce Investment Area (WIA) eligibility requirements.
- Lottery Tuition Assistance:Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) may be available for eligible apprentices enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a technical college.
