Any health care professional needs the skill to communicate with hearing impaired patients. Health care providers need an understanding of deaf culture as well as being familiar with the different ways to communicate with a hearing impaired patient. Some basic signs are imperative for health care providers.

Class is taught by Gibby Cates, nurse-midwife, with over 20 years experience in nursing. The class will meet on June 4, 2008 in the Tyner Auditorium at SHRS, cost is $35. Call 864-592-4900 for more information.

Floral Design IIFloral Design I

Learn the necessary skills to lead you to employment in the floral industry. This course provides the hands-on training foundation for a working knowledge of floral design. Topics include basic geometric arrangements, simple corsage work, bows, vase designs and introduction to holiday creations with fresh flowers. Students need to bring scissors, wire cutter and needle nose pliers. Flowers provided. Class is prerequisite for Floral Design II.

Now that you have gained the knowledge and expertise on basic floral designs, expand your skills and learn floral design techniques for weddings and funeral tributes. Students need to bring scissors, wire cutter and needle nose pliers. Flowers provided. Floral Design I is a prerequisite.

Holiday Flower DecorationWhether you need to make a floral design for that certain place in your home, a centerpiece for the dining table, or decorations for holidays, this course will cover all you need to know. You will learn flower preparation, elements of design, supply needs, how to choose and blend materials, and assembly of table, door, and mantle decorations out of fresh and silk material. Students need to bring scissors to class. Other materials provided.

Ms. Williams shares her expertise in floral knowledge from floral design basics to more unique construction for holiday decorating

Country music star and South Carolina native Aaron Tippin will be the featured performer at Spartanburg Community College Foundation’s annual fundraising event, Red, White and Boom, on Friday, June 27, at Barnet Park in downtown Spartanburg.  The event is sponsored by Food Lion and will feature patriotic music by the Spartanburg Community Band, directed by George Wenger. The evening will culminate in one of the largest fireworks display in the Carolinas in celebration of the Independence Day weekend.

Proceeds benefit the Spartanburg Community College Foundation.

 Smart Jobs tested 6 applicants for job training: basic skills in reading, finding information and math.

A dozen job applicants took the Wonderlic ERI, which gives interviewers insights into applicants’ values and offers suggested interview questions.

Bennett-Mechanical and Applied Mathematics tests, which score ability to understand mechanical processes and do math appropriate for industrial applications were given to 89 candidates off-site.

    It just makes sense to be prepared in case of an emergency. This new series of classes, aimed at older Americans, teaches how to get prepared for disasters, home safety, flu outbreaks and terrorism. Classes may be taken as a series, or you can register for each one separately.

    Instructor Barbara Grudzien: Being prepared for emergencies and disasters has been part of Barbara Grudzien’s life for more than 20 years. She is a certified instructor for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as well as an EMT-Basic and a ham radio operator. She volunteers with support services at the North Spartanburg Fire Department. She has a degree from Southern Nevada Vocational Technical College, and she was trained as an apprentice at Clark Community College. She is also certified in CPR and First Aid.

    Computer Basics $180

    Do you want to learn about computers, Windows, and the Internet? This course will help you understand “tech talk”, show you how to use Windows controls, manage files, use a browser, send e-mail and more. All kinds of software will be demonstrated including word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics software. This course is great for beginners, but there’s enough new and useful information to keep you interested even if you have some experience with PCs.  Important:  Book may be purchased in the SCC Book Inn.

    If you have been considering a career as a professional truck driver; the CDL Truck Driver Training Program will give the credentials and experience to work with over-the-road and regional trucking nationwide.  You will obtain your Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License and will be provided job placement assistance upon successful completion of this 170-hour training program.     The Cancer Association of Spartanburg and Cherokee counties teach strategies and techniques to successfully stop smoking and using tobacco products. This four week course is beneficial to those wishing to stop using tobacco and live a healthier life.

    This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT - Electrocardiograph Technician Examination.

    This course will include important practice and background information on

    • anatomy of the heart and physiology
    • medical disease processes
    • medical terminology
    • medical ethics
    • legal aspects of patient contact
    • laboratory assisting
    • electrocardiography
    • echocardiography

    Additionally, students will practice with equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices. EKG Technicians also analyze printed readings of EKG tests, measuring various cardiac intervals and complexes and determining normal vs. abnormal EKG.
