Spartanburg, S.C. –Spartanburg Community College (SCC) has partnered with Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg County Dental Society to host the fourth “Give Kids a Smile Day”, kicking off National Children’s Dental Health Month in February. Held at SCC’s state-of-the-art and simulated dental office, students enrolled in SCC’s Expanded Duty Dental Assistant Program will work under the guidance of local volunteer dentists and staff/board members of Healthy Smiles to provide basic dental care to Spartanburg County children who have received little to no dental care.
The purpose of “Give Kids a Smile Day” is to increase access to oral healthcare for at-risk children from underserved communities. The clinic provides screenings, cleanings, restorative care and preventive dental education to 100 children, aged four to 18, at no cost to the families.
Tooth decay is the #1 childhood disease and is 100 percent preventable. According to a 2002 Department of Health and Environmental Control report, 23.9 percent of Spartanburg County children require urgent dental care as compared to 11.4 percent statewide.
