Summer Camps for Students ages 11 to 17.

Spartanburg, S.C. – Upstate students will soon have help filling their hot summer days as Spartanburg Community College’s (SCC) Corporate & Community Education Division offers summer day camps for students ages 11 – 17.

Eleven camps offered this summer include:

  • Advanced Video Game Design
  • Animation
  • CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
  • Checkmate! Chess Camp for Teens
  • Etiquette, Manners and Confidence
  • Golf Camp
  • Sewing Basics
  • Sign Language Basics
  • Photography Basics
  • Photoshop Camp for Teens
  • Video Game Design Camp

The camps will be held throughout June and July at SCC’s central campus in Spartanburg and  the Tyger River Campus in Duncan. The Golf Camp also has a session in August and is held at LB’s Westside Golf Range in Spartanburg.

“We are excited about SCC camps this year because of the variety we’re offering to young people,” says Rebecca Clusserath, program manger in SCC’s Corporate & Community Education Division. “Our camp themes offer something for all kids. In fact, once camp is over, students will have a new skill or talent they can enjoy for years to come.” Clusserath also says that SCC summer camps offer parents the comfort of knowing their children are in a fun, yet safe, educational environment. Each camp offers fun, hands-on projects and experiences. Campers in the Sewing Basics for Teens will get to make pajama pants, while campers in the Animation Camp will create their own digital animation projects. Teenagers interested in photography can learn the basics of taking great photos in the Photography Basics Camp or how to edit them in the Photoshop Camp. Skills that students can use their entire lives will be taught in the Etiquette, Manners and Confidence and in Sign Language Basics camps.

Camps are lead by highly skilled and talented instructors with years of real world experience. Instructors have also taught related topics to adults through SCC’s Corporate & Community Education Division.  Phil Cassidy, who will teach campers the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, is the executive director of the USA Junior Golf Tour and the Golf Professional at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Spartanburg. The CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Camp is lead by Jesse Harris, Jr. who has 30 years of experience in law enforcement including patrol, investigations, special operations, and training and has held positions as a patrol officer, investigator, supervisor, Assistant Chief and Chief of Police.

The most popular camp has been the Video Game Design. “Last year campers enjoyed Video Game Design camp so much that we added Advanced Game Design this year,” said Daryl Clevenger, SCC faculty member and instructor of the Video Game Design and Advanced Game Design camps. Both male and female campers will enjoy this because they play video games at home and with their friends, and they already have a general idea about what makes the games ‘good’’, said Clevenger. “The kids were a delight. While I was teaching them, they were teaching me as well.”

Registration for SCC summer camps is going on now. For a complete schedule visit www.sccsc.edu/cce or contact the SCC Corporate & Community Education Division at

Game Design Camp 2009 was a Huge Success!

Thirteen teens, ages 11 to 15, attended the Game Design Camp and they were a wonderful group!

When asked to voice their favorite and least favorite things about the camp, here is what they had to say:

  • Everything!  This was the “funn-est” camp I’ve ever been to
  • Everyone and everything
  • The SNACKS!
  • Yoo-hoos and Pizza
  • Software was easy to follow
  • FREE STUFF! (flash drives, cool book and software)
  • Learned fundamentals relevant to modern gaming (we promise this is a quote)
  • The instructor, Darryl
  • The instructor’s goofy analogies

  • Wish it had lasted two weeks instead of one
  • Would like to go deeper into the content
  • Not enough pizza!  (Guess we forgot how much Pizza is loved!)

All the students are interested in coming back next summer.  We even had requests for some advanced Game Design Classes — Animation/3-D simulation.

CCE wants to thank our staff for their hard work in making this class a success; Darryl, Jenny, Kris, and Tami.  Stay tuned for future plans and schedules.  Visit www.sccsc.edu/cce for a full list of our class offerings.
