The Spartanburg Community College (SCC) Cherokee County Campus (CCC) is hosting an information session about scholarship opportunities for veterans who have lived in Cherokee County for at least one year and plan to enroll in one of SCC’s industrial and engineering technology programs. These veterans may be eligible for Cherokee County K-14 Initiative scholarship funds that will help cover the full cost of tuition at SCC.
“This is an excellent opportunity for veterans of any age to train for a career in modern manufacturing,” said Daryl Smith, SCC CCC campus director. “This industry is booming in our area and great jobs are available for those with technical skills. Several of our programs have a 100 percent job placement rate, which means our graduates are work-force ready and in high demand by local employers.”
The K-14 Initiative was established by Cherokee 2020 to encourage Cherokee County residents to continue their education for at least two more years beyond high school. As a part of this initiative the Cherokee County Council has budgeted $60,000 in scholarship funds this year to encourage residents to enroll in industrial trade programs at colleges located within Cherokee County. The ultimate goal is to meet local employers’ demands for trained employees and decrease the unemployment rate in Cherokee County. Cherokee 2020, Cherokee County Veterans Affairs Office and Cherokee County Adult Education have partnered with SCC to promote and carry out the K-14 Initiative.
In addition to veterans, individuals who have received a high school diploma or G.E.D within the past 12 months and have lived in Cherokee County for at least one year are also eligible for funds that cover any tuition amount remaining after all other funding and financial aid options have been exhausted.
Veterans interested in learning more about the K-14 Initiative scholarship funds should attend an information session at SCC’s Cherokee County Campus on Tuesday, September 18, 5:30-7:30pm, in the L. Hoke Parris Business Training Center. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 864.206.2700.
