Spartanburg Community College (SCC) and BMW will co-host the Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative (AMTEC) Academy, Maintenance 2020: What Does this Mean to the Maintenance Technicians?, on March 22-23. AMTEC, a national collaborative of two-year colleges and global automotive industry partners, holds academies and workshops on a range of topics involving automotive manufacturing trends and training. The Maintenance 2020 Academy sessions will be held at SCC’s central campus in Spartanburg and attendees will have the opportunity to tour the BMW plant on March 23.

“We are honored to host the Maintenance 2020 Academy at SCC this year,” said Mike Forrester, SCC director of economic development and interim director of SCC’s Corporate and Community Education division. “SCC has been an active member of AMTEC since it was established in 2005. Our involvement with AMTEC, along with our on-going partnerships with BMW and Ford, not only help keep us abreast of industry demands and trends, but we are also included in developing new curriculum for colleges and training centers nationally that will prepare tomorrow’s automotive workforce to be globally competitive.”

The Maintenance 2020 Academy will cover the expectations for the future of manufacturing sustainability, the global outlook of manufacturing, global standards for technicians, and much more. A demonstration of the AMTEC Manufacturing Simulator, a state-of-the-art manufacturing training tool, will also be held, along with a discussion on how industry and educators use the simulator for troubleshooting training.

AMTEC is a national center of excellence in advanced automotive manufacturing and is funded by the National Science Foundation as an Advance Technological Education Center. It is comprised of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and colleges in 12 states that are addressing the skills and competencies of the current and future workforce. SCC is the only technical college in South Carolina and one of only 19 community/technical colleges across the U.S. who are members of AMTEC. Global automotive manufacturing partners include BMW, Toyota, General Motors and Ford Motor Company.

Spartanburg, S.C. – After only 12 weeks of free training, hundreds of Upstate residents could have the opportunity to interview for one of more than 500 full-time job openings forecasted to be available next year with local automotive suppliers.

“Between March through August of next year, local companies that serve as suppliers to the automotive industry will need to fill between 350 to 600 jobs,” said Dr. Dave Just, vice president of corporate and community education for Spartanburg Community College. “Through a partnership with the Workforce Investment Board, SCC will provide the continuing education training for these positions that will train workers to serve as production operators at any of these companies.”

Funded by a grant from AdvanceSC, the training is designed to meet national standards set by the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and will focus on workplace safety, quality practices and measurements, and manufacturing processes and production. Those completing the training will be MSSC certified production technicians.

To enroll in the program, individuals must first attend one of several orientation sessions that will be offered at the SCC central campus on Tuesday, August 4 or Saturday, August 8 by registering via phone at (864) 562-4168 or online at www.onestopcareer.com/registration.aspx.

To be accepted into the program, individuals must have a high school diploma or GED, score the minimum required on a WorkKeys assessment geared specifically toward MSSC training and pass a drug-screening test as a part of the Workforce Investment Board application process. The first series of classes will begin in mid-October 2009. Those completing the 12-week training program will be guaranteed an interview with a local employer.
