AFL is continuing its Operational Workforce Program into 2020 with 14 new students from Byrnes High School joining the program in January.

Through a partnership with Spartanburg Community College Corporate & Community Education, the training program will offer the students an introduction to manufacturing, according to a news release. Classes are provided by Spartanburg Community College professors at Byrnes High School.

“With competition for a talented workforce at an all-time high, this program provides an entrance point for our younger generation,” Ryan Burns, human resources director for AFL, said in the release. “We are able to train students who are eager to learn about manufacturing and jumpstart their career.”

AFL started its first Operational Workforce Program in early 2018 and have fully employed six students who graduated from the program.

“The training we provide also creates an awareness of who we are, the impact we have in our markets, with our customers and in our community,” Burns said in the release.

AFL, a manufacturer of fiber optic cable, equipment and accessories, began operations in Spartanburg County in 1984, manufacturing Optical Ground Wire, a fiber optic cable found on transmission lines, according to the release. Since then AFL has expanded its product portfolio to include additional fiber optic cable, connectors, fiber management systems, test and inspection equipment, education, training and services.

The company’s products are in use in more than 130 countries. AFL also offers a variety of services supporting data center, enterprise, wireless and outside plant applications. The company is headquartered in Spartanburg and is a subsidiary of Fujikura Ltd. of Japan.

After five months of long night drives from Union, Ashley Cool paused with her classmates Dec. 13 to celebrate another step on her path towards a nursing career.

Cool is one of six students to participate in a pinning ceremony as the first graduates of a new Patient Care Technician certificate program at the local Spartanburg Community College campus. Graduates included Manda Bolin, Maranda Bolin, Cassidy Case, Melany Williams and Bobbi Peterson, who also received her certified nursing assistant certificate during the ceremony.

A patient care technician supports nurses and medical staff by monitoring vital signs, drawing blood and providing basic patient care.

For the past five months, Cool, 24, drove an hour from her home in Union to the Spartanburg Community College campus to attend 3- hour evening classes four nights a week in Gaffney. She worked a full-time job on the weekends, balancing caring for her two young sons with late-night study sessions.

“When I took the certified nursing assistant class, our teacher at Spartanburg Community College encouraged us to continue our education by signing up for the patient care technician class,” Cool said. “I feel very blessed to have a compassionate teacher for the class. I learned a lot about myself. This experience has made me want to become a registered nurse so I will enroll in ECPI (East Coast Polytechnic Institute) in Greenville next year.”

Students completed 64 hours of classroom work, 44 hours of clinical work and have passed two national exams to become certified as patient care technicians and electrocardiogram (EKG) heart monitor technicians. The students will take their final exam for a phlebotomy certification test in mid-January. This will allow them to obtain blood samples from patients in medical offices and prepare those specimens for medical testing.

The Patient Care Technician class allowed students to gain experience at the college’s medical partners Cherokee Medical Center, Union Medical Center, Brookview Terrace, Valley Falls Terrace, and Spartanburg Medical Center.

“We always tell our students that their clinical hours are an extended job interview where they are gaining experience and being watched by potential employers,” said Cynthia

Gray, healthcare program director for SCC corporate and community education. “We have several graduates who have already been offered positions once they pass their certification exams. This education program is a win win situation for both our students and the medical profession.”

By: Nolan Blair, WYFF ReporterImate of Operation Workforce inmates

Around 15 inmates were recognized for work they’re doing to better their lives outside jail at Cherokee County Detention Center.

“They earned their South Carolina Ready to Work certificate, which is work keys because they can go out, you know, apply for jobs,” said Lisa Hannon, director of the Adult Education Program for Cherokee County. “And they also earned a certificate through Spartanburg Community College Corporate & Community Education Division on operational workforce training.”

Business and community leaders were present for the ceremony, showing their support to the inmates.

Jamyn Humphries was one of the inmates recognized. He says he’s been in the Cherokee County Detention Center for 10 months because of a heroin addiction. Humphries believes he’s the most mature he’s been. His wants to succeed in society when free and not return to jail.

“It’s not a goal, it’s a mission,” said Humphries. “It’s my lifelong mission going forward not to return to jail. I have children and family that love me.”

Officials say the same certificates will be offered to women in January 2020.
