By: Nolan Blair, WYFF ReporterImate of Operation Workforce inmates

Around 15 inmates were recognized for work they’re doing to better their lives outside jail at Cherokee County Detention Center.

“They earned their South Carolina Ready to Work certificate, which is work keys because they can go out, you know, apply for jobs,” said Lisa Hannon, director of the Adult Education Program for Cherokee County. “And they also earned a certificate through Spartanburg Community College Corporate & Community Education Division on operational workforce training.”

Business and community leaders were present for the ceremony, showing their support to the inmates.

Jamyn Humphries was one of the inmates recognized. He says he’s been in the Cherokee County Detention Center for 10 months because of a heroin addiction. Humphries believes he’s the most mature he’s been. His wants to succeed in society when free and not return to jail.

“It’s not a goal, it’s a mission,” said Humphries. “It’s my lifelong mission going forward not to return to jail. I have children and family that love me.”

Officials say the same certificates will be offered to women in January 2020.

Music-1960The 1960s were one of the most turbulent decades in our nation’s history. We had the Civil Rights movement, the war in Vietnam, assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Senator Robert Kennedy, and Malcom X. We had the sexual revolution, cold war, Berlin Wall, Cuban Missile Crisis, riots and burning of major cities, women’s movement, dissent and disobedience throughout the country, and men walking on the moon.

Plus, we had the greatest popular music of all time! This lecture series will cover the decade year by year. The 1960s. They were turbulent and they were memorable. Come revisit this special time.
